The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra has filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court stating that online lotteries have been conducted in compliance with rules, local media reports.

Maharashtra state defiant on lotteries

The affidavit comes after a PIL - public interest litigation - was filed seeking an immediate ban on unauthorised online lotteries.

The PIL alleged that more than 1,300 unauthorised online lotteries were operating in Maharashtra, and stated the government had permitted only 13 online lotteries.

The petitioner said that by circumventing tax requirements, unauthorised lotteries had generated a loss in state revenues equivalent to $150m.
