The US state of New York took a significant step towards legalising daily fantasy sports on Friday when lawmakers overwhelmingly backed a bill that defines DFS as a skill game and not gambling.

New York state senate

The legislature passed the bill quickly, with the state assembly voting 91-22 on Friday night and the senate 45-17 in the early hours of Saturday.

It is not clear whether state governor Andrew Cuomo will sign the bill into law as he has not made any public comment on DFS. However, both the state assembly and senate passed the bill by big enough margins to ultimately override any veto.

Once official, gaming commissioners will still have to issue temporary permits before operators can get back to business.

Meanwhile, New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman will continue his court case against leading operators FanDuel and DraftKings, saying they are still culpable for actions taken before the legislation becomes law.
