The government for the Canadian province of Québec is progressing a bill that includes a provision that could force internet service providers to prevent residents of Québec accessing online gambling sites that aren’t approved by the government.

The province’s finance minister said the bill is necessary because illegal sites do not adhere to “responsible gaming rules” in the same way as those run by the government and consequently pose a “risk to the population.”

Critics claim the bill amounts to internet censoring while also representing a means for the state-owned gambling authority to block competition.
