As many as 1.5 million Dutch people gamble online in spite of a ban on real-money online gaming in the Netherlands, according to new research by Motivaction, commissioned by the state-owned Holland Casino group.
The research findings claim that the Dutch spend more than €500m gambling online annually, a total far in excess of previous estimates.
A total of 1.5 million players would mean that one in 10 of the Netherlands’ over-12s gambles online, although Motivaction said that around half of those gamble three times a year or fewer.
The Dutch government is widely expected to legalise online gambling in 2017 with more than 200 potential operators believed to have registered an interest.
