A survey of registered voters in the US state of Pennsylvania found that just 21 per cent of those polled supported real-money online gambling in the state.

The survey of around 500 voters was commissioned by Sheldon Adelson (pictured), the Las Vegas Sands CEO and vociferous opponent of online gaming in the US

The poll asked voters if they support the Pennsylvania lottery, horse racing, casino resort gambling, online Keno games in bars and eateries and online gambling.

Recording 84 per cent approval, the lottery had the most support, followed by horse racing at 60 per cent and casinos (59 per cent).

Support for keno was 35 per cent while online gambling placed last with 21 per cent support.

However, Pennsylvania state representative John Payne, quoted in The Morning Call, said results of polls undertaken by independent organisations are more legitimate than those funded by someone who has a vested interest in the outcome.

“I don't hold much credibility to the survey because of the way it was done,” he said.
