Portugal’s long awaited online gambling bill will come into force on June 28 after the country’s council of ministers signed it into law.

The bill introduces a legislative framework for i-gaming under the ambit of gambling regulator Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa.

In a statement, the council said: “The bill will proceed with the regulation of online gambling in line with the recommendations issued by the EC on this matter and international best practices.

“Licences will be awarded to all the companies that will ensure the full respect of a set of financial, economic and technical requirements.”

The window for licence applications is now open.
