Mexico is near to introducing online gambling regulations after its major political parties voted in favour of a gambling bill.

The development comes following an agreement between the country’s National Action Party (PAN) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

If approved, the legislation will result in the country’s online gaming market becoming a single-nation, firewalled entity that is serviced by only a few providers, and not a fully participating member of a global player pool.

The regulations will target Mexico’s unregulated casinos, as well as the country’s black-market “mini-casinos”, with increased protection against money laundering and a minimum age restriction of 21 to be introduced.

The new rules may force hundreds of players to relocate as many poker players from the United States have settled in Mexico to access the world’s largest sites.
