Portugal has submitted amendments to its gaming legislation to the European Commission with the intention of legalising online gambling, with proposals of 15 per cent tax on games of chance and eight per cent tax on sportsbetting on gross gaming revenues up to €5m and €30m respectively.

Amounts over this will be subsequent to a tax formula capped at 30 per cent for games of chance and 16 per cent for sportsbetting.

The Remote Gaming Association believes that: “a viable and competitive market in the future would benefit … consumers nd the government” with the generated tax revenue being distributed accordingly to the state, the Ministry of Solidarity, Employment and Social Security, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Science.
