The Singaporean Parliament has today put forward legislation known as the Remote Gambling Bill which will, if passed, criminalise all activities associated with online gambling.

The bill allows the government to block payment and access to websites - sites which facilitate online gambling will be subject to this measure, while the bank accounts of those associated with remote gambling will also be targeted.

The restrictions applied by the bill also prohibit advertising, making any form of promotion involving online gambling an offence.

Organisations may apply to an exemption scheme. Applicants must be not-for-profit, contribute to charitable or social purposes, and have a good track record with the Singaporean government.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has said in a statement: “The objectives for regulating remote gambling are to maintain law and order, and protect young persons and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by remote gambling.”
