After eight years of failed attempts to pass online gambling legislation, lawmakers in the US state of California are advancing proposals that would legalise online poker in the Golden State.

Members of the Assembly Governmental Organisation Committee passed bill AB2863, backed by assemblyman Adam Gray, with a unanimous vote on Wednesday.

Tribal governments have fought previous attempts to regulate online poker in the state but the six tribes that previously opposed the bill did not contest the vote.
