The police in the Chinese province of Shandong have arrested 39 people in connection with an international online gambling ring operating throughout south-east Asia that is believed to be worth up to $10bn.

Han Lei, the vice director of the Public Security Bureau in Shandong's capital, Jinan, said the authority had sifted through 250,000 pieces of data, uncovering “4,000 suspicious account numbers” during an eight-month investigation.

“By following their directions of flow, we found more than 60 suspects in Jinan," he said.
