The world's first eye-controlled arcade game will make its first public appearance at Dave & Buster's Time Square, New York, today.

Tobii Technology

Developed by Swedish company Tobii Technology, a leading developer of eye tracking and eye control, Tobii EyeAsteroids represents an expansion of eye tracking applications into the consumer market.

Eye tracking and eye control make it possible for computing devices to know exactly where users are looking. Using eye control for gaming is a much talked about concept at the moment and Barbara Barclay, general manager of Tobii North America, said its use in interactive entertainment added a new dimension to the experience, making it more intuitive, immersive and fun.

Using this technology, players are able to control their character with a joystick but aim with their eyes; aim with a wireless controller and turn around by looking to the side of the display; establish genuine eye contact with characters in a game; look a bot straight in the eyes and give a command using a keyboard or voice; create an emotional intensity that makes characters act as real humans responding to the player's gaze and adapt the game action to their attention and mental state.

"Tobii EyeAsteroids is another example of how seamless the adoption of eye tracking can become in our everyday lives and how the integration of eye tracking in consumer electronics can greatly benefit the overall user experience," said Barclay. "With this product we are able to revolutionise this industry as it looks to the future of gamer interaction beyond that of motion gaming and dance pads."
