Universal Studios is to build a multi-billion-dollar theme park in Beijing, China, in partnership with a consortium of state-owned companies.

According to Chinese state media, the Comcast-owned park operator has agreed a deal with Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co to develop the project, which is due to open by 2019.

The park, which is believed to represent an $8bn investment, will be Universal’s third in Asia and is expected to cover a total area of 1,000 acres.

Officials from both parties reportedly signed a joint-venture agreement at a ceremony attended by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and Shouhuan’s general manager, Yu Xuezhong.
