The Czech Republic could be about to increase taxes on betting companies, potentially doubling the rate currently applied to the sector.

Citing local media, Reuters reports that Finance Minister Andrej Babis is seeking to increase the rate on gross win from 20 per cent to 30-40 per cent. Companies also currently pay a corporate tax rate of 19 per cent.

Fixed-odds betting is to be taxed at the lower end of the scale, while gaming machines would be hit with the highest increase.

Babis is understood to planning to announce the new proposals on Friday.
