A unique scheme aimed at promoting and rewarding good practice and responsible gaming at UK arcades has had a successful start.

Yorkshire Arcades

One local council in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, has awarded certificates of merit to five arcade operators in its territory, in conjunction with the UK trade association, BACTA.

The aim is to raise standards and reduce the level of inspection required by the council at the same time providing a system of support and advice to local businesses to promote public health initiatives and safeguard players.

Twenty-one arcades were assessed by the council and BACTA on seven standards, including crime prevention, pubic health and safeguards. The first arcades to be given the new accolade were Taylor Made Fun at Bridlington, the winner, with Smiles for Miles at Withernsea as runners-up.

Also given awards were Leisureland and J Noble and Sons, both at Bridlington, and W and J Shaw at Withernsea.

Now the trade association is hoping that the scheme will catch on with other local authorities and create a better relationship between the industry and local politicians.
