Dubai’s Mall of the World, set to be the largest mall ever constructed, will include the biggest indoor family theme park anywhere on the globe.

Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced plans for the project, described as the world’s first “temperature-controlled city,” which is to cover an area of 48 million sq.ft.

The theme park will be covered by a glass dome that will open during the cooler winter months. The site will also boast 20,000 hotel rooms and a cultural district comprising theatres built around New York’s Broadway, The Celebration Walk, similar to the Ramblas in Barcelona, and shopping streets based on London’s Oxford Street. There will even be a dedicated zone catering for medical tourists.

The developers are aiming to attract around 180 million visitors each year.

“The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai’s tourism infrastructure as soon as possible,” said Sheikh Mohammed. “This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us; and we are determined to achieve our vision.”
