UK casino operator Aspers is considering closing its casino in Swansea, Wales.

Concerns about its commercial future have prompted Aspers to begin a 90-day consultation with its staff.

Richard Noble, Aspers chief operating officer, said: “We have undertaken a comprehensive review of the Swansea site, which has determined that the continued operation of Aspers in Swansea does no seem to be commercially viable.”

Aspers at Salubrious place opened in 2007 and is one of four casinos currently operated by the group.

Swansea was among the eight locations to be granted a small casino licence under the 2005 Gambling Act and it seems both the economy and the lack of progress in awarding this licence have prompted Aspers to re-evaluate the business.

"For five years now we have eagerly awaited the opportunity to bid for the licence which would have allowed us to operate a much more viable and enhanced customer experience with a wider offer than a typical casino,” Noble said. "Unfortunately, the licence has still not been issued for tender."

The casino has also been “battling extremely challenging trading conditions” in the last few years, he added.

“Combined, these factors have led us to the difficult decision to consult on the closure of the Swansea site.”

If the casino does close, the company will work with those affected to offer redeployment opportunities, he added.

Earlier this year, Aspers opened the UK’s largest casino at Westfield Stratford City in London, close to the Olympic site, and recently won the licence to operate a large casino in Milton Keynes.
