Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has given planning permission to the developers of a casino and hotel project at the NEC, Birmingham, UK.

Plans for the Resorts World at the NEC complex, which is being jointly developed by the NEC Group and the UK’s largest casino operator Genting, were granted outline planning permission at a council meeting on Monday.

Approval is subject to a number of conditions and will now go through a 12-week appeal process. Following the successful conclusion of that, the developers will then submit detailed designs.

Earlier this month, the council indicated that it would approve the application if certain issues, such as public transport and traffic management, are addressed.

Overall, the project is expected to represent an investment of £120m and will create 1,000 new jobs when it opens in 2013.

In an interview with InterGaming following Genting UK's announcement that it was to sponsor Aston Villa Football Club last year, company executive deputy chairman Peter Brooks said the company was "well rooted" in the West Midlands.
