Leeds City Council expects to begin inviting applications for its large UK casino licence towards the end of January.

Following a public consultation earlier this year, the council is currently in the process of agreeing the policy that will determine how its application process will work. The policy was approved by the council’s executive board last month and will be going to the full council meeting in January.

Council communications officer Emma Whittell told InterGaming that if the policy is approved, potential developers would then be invited to apply for the licence.

At the moment, she said, the council does not have a preferred location. In recent years several sites have been suggested as possibilities for development.

It remains to be seen, however, whether a city that already houses four casinos, will be as attractive a proposition as some of the other locations permitted to offer large casino licences under the 2005 Gambling Act.
