Convergence between land-based and online gaming is essential but the disparity in taxation between the two will be a crucial point of debate, it has been claimed.

Gianfranco Scordato, chief executive officer of Gran Casino Costa Brava, said that Spain’s new online gaming regulation, which was announced in May, represents a “major change” within the country’s gaming industry.

Although it is expected to create new opportunities for gaming operators, there are still issues to be resolved, he said.

“There is evidently a disparity between online and offline gaming in critical areas such as taxation and advertising,” he told InterGaming. “This will definitely be the base of debate where the two realities of the gaming industry must converge to survive.”
