Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is expected to sign a new gaming expansion law today that will create three new casino licences and one slots parlour licence.

The bill passed by a large majority through the state’s legislature and was placed before the Governor last week. Patrick, who is believed to have worked closely with those drafting the bill in order to deliver a package of measures he would be willing to approve, has previously stated that gaming can be an important economic driver for the state.

Several operators, including Ameristar, are already lining up to apply for the licences, expected to cost in the region of $85m each and require a minimum capital investment of $500m.

Massachusetts will become the 40th US state with legal, full-sale commercial casinos.

Once signed into law, the process of choosing which developers will be issued with licences will be handed over to a newly-created gaming commission.
