The Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland has welcomed the government's plans to regulate the gaming sector and has backed the decision to clock the development of resort-style casinos.

Yesterday, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Alan Shatter announced that the government has agreed to his proposals to begin working on new legislation to modernise the country’s gambling laws with draft legislation to be presented in the spring.

Proper regulation of the gaming sector is "good news," the GLAI said. "A properly regulated casino sector will bring Ireland in line with the best international practice and should facilitate a reduction in the incidence of problem gambling," the association said. "Moreover, a properly regulated gaming sector will undoubtedly lead to job creation over time.

"We also concur with the minister’s view that resort-style casinos are not appropriate in the context of the Irish market, noting that while there is a demand for some form of casino entertainment, it would not be sufficient to sustain a large-scale casino."
