Genting Casinos, the largest operator in the UK, is considering closing three of its casinos.

The company has entered a 30-day consultation period over the future of the Great Yarmouth Mint, the Manchester Mint and the Leicester Electric Circus.

"It is with regret that we are proposing to close three of our premises," said Paul Willcock, provincial managing director for Genting Casinos UK. "The decision is based purely on the economic performance of the individual clubs involved and we hope to be able to transfer staff to other Genting clubs wherever possible.

"These proposed closures are isolated incidents and we will be continuing to invest in our provincial estate as a whole to improve and expand facilities."

Staff employed at the Manchester and Leicester sites will be given the opportunity to work at alternative Genting sites locally but the GMB union, which represents workers at all three casinos, said this may not be possible for those in Great Yarmouth.

The union said it would be approaching the company to seek favourable terms for its members.

"The staff affected at both Manchester and Leicester sites will have the opportunity to be redeployed within the company locally," said GMB’s national casinos organiser, Adrian Baker. "While the company will offer up employment alternatives to these staff, GMB will be approaching the company to seek an improved relocation package for these staff.

"However, the company has made clear that redeployment is not an option for those employed in Great Yarmouth.

"The Great Yarmouth staff have shown the same dedication, loyalty and commitment to Genting. GMB is seeking talks on all the options open for these staff, including relocation to other parts of the country and decent severance arrangements for those who lose their jobs."
