Developer St Modwen has won planning permission to build a £15m casino, hotel and office development in Oldbury, West Midlands.

The 24,000sq.ft casino and entertainment complex, which will be built at Birchley Island, is being developed in partnership with Grosvenor Casinos, the gaming arm of the Rank Group.

“We have been working closely with Grosvenor Casinos and Sandwell Council to create a landmark building for the Birchley Island site which will help the local economy and deliver a vibrant destination at the gateway to Oldbury,” said Ian Romano, senior development surveyor at St Modwen. “We believe that this development will stimulate further regeneration on the site which will attract further inward investment benefitting both the immediate location and the wider region.”

Following the granting of planning approval, construction is expected to begin in the summer.

“We’re very pleased to see the progress that this development is making,” said Richard Edwards, operations director for Grosvenor Casinos. “The G Casino, which is planned for this site, is an exciting concept whereby we put as much emphasis on the non-gaming elements as we do the gaming. This includes a great bar, live entertainment and a great value restaurant. The casino will not only create a large number of new jobs within the area but it will also offer the people of Oldbury another exciting option for a night out.”
