The government of Macau is to cap the number of gaming tables operated in the enclave, according to local reports.

On Tuesday, Francis Tam, secretary for economy and finance, announced plans to limit the growth in tables to 10 per cent - around 500 - over the next three years as part of efforts to control the rapid expansion of the industry.

"Those casino developments that have already been approved may continue to complete their construction," he told legislators. "All those that haven’t been approved or haven’t applied for approval have already been halted.

"So within the next three years, casino tables will only reach 5,500," he said.
