The UK’s gambling industry is a £13.8bn (€15.8bn) industry, according to the statistics announced today by the Gambling Commission in its twice-a-year report.

The report, which covers the year to September 2016, showed decreases in many sectors. There were fewer employees in the industry, down 0.4 per cent (total 106,678), fewer betting shops, down 1.4 per cent (total 8,788), fewer bingo halls, down 5.7 per cent (to 583), fewer casinos, down just one to 147, but a 32 per cent market share for the remote gaming sector.

Gaming machines were down 0.2 per cent at 176,410, said the report, and 34,388 (down 0.6 per cent) of the B2 machines or fixed odds betting machines.
