Legislation that would have permitted casino gambling in the US state of Georgia is “dead for the year,” reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Senator Brandon Beach told the Journal-Constitution he “does not have the votes to get Senate Bill 79 out of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee."

“I am not discouraged,” he said. “I will double down and plan to criss-cross the state, starting in April,” adding that he aims to build support for the bill in 2018.

Beach’s original plan called for up to six casinos and a racing track across the state, although that was ultimately whittled down to two resort casinos, with proceeds from a 20 per cent tax going to a host of social causes and related projects.

Ultimately, Beach could not find the backing needed to push the bill forward. Determined to try again, he told the Journal-Constitution: “You can tell everyone, like Arnold Schwarzenegger said, ‘I’ll be back.’”
