Jim Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, has re-ignited the casino debate in the US state of Georgia.

Earlier this week, Murren told the Rotary Club of Atlanta that Las Vegas-style gambling, including a $1bn resort in the city, could be a catalyst for economic development and boost the lottery-funded HOPE programme.

His comments add momentum to renewed efforts to legalise casino gambling in Georgia, although powerful opponents remain, including state Governor Nathan Deal.

Murren said that MGM research showed Georgians spend $600m a year at casinos outside the state, currently delivering no economic benefit for Georgia.
