There are 33,000 illegal gaming machines operating in Chile currently, according to a study commissioned by the gambling regulator, the Superintendence of Casinos.

The study was carried out by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, one of the country’s oldest universities. It was conducted over 87 communities and the 33,000 machines it discovered all lie outside of the regulations. The findings have now been presented to the local communities for action.

The study involved visiting more than 3,000 licensed premises or gaming rooms in the most populated areas of the country. In all, over 1,300 of them contained electronic machines paying out in cash or tickets. Only seven of the 87 communities were without any evidence of illegal gambling devices. Under Chilean law, only licensed casinos may operate gambling machines.
