Atlantic City’s main casino workers union, Unite-HERE, says workers at the Trump Taj Mahal casino are to strike today.

Local 54 of the union said it had been unable to reach agreement on a new contract with the Taj Mahal. The walkout of around 1,000 union members began at 6am EST (10am GMT).

The disruption comes on July 4 weekend, one of the busiest times of the year for Atlantic City casinos.

The Taj Mahal was the only one of the five casinos targeted by the union that was unable to reach a new deal, with the union unhappy with the earlier cancellation of health and pension benefits.

On Thursday, the union struck deals with three casinos owned by Caesars Entertainment - Bally’s, Caesars and Harrah’s - as well as the Tropicana.
