Action is expected to start this week on bills that could significantly affect the gaming industry in the US state of Florida.

Florida

Among the proposals in bills introduced last Friday is ratification of the new Seminole Indian compact, which also allows for a slots casino in Miami-Dade and another in Palm Beach County.

The 750-machine Palm Beach casino is expected to go to Palm Beach Kennel Club, which has long lobbied for slots. There are two proposals for the slots casinos; one would award them to a qualified applicant and the other would put them up for bid.

Another bill requires a statewide referendum for any future gaming expansion. Such a law would prevent the proliferation of slot casinos that could happen if the state Supreme Court decides that current law allows counties to legalise slots at pari-mutuels through local referendums.
