Taxes from casinos in Cambodia during the first half of this year reached US$12m, it has been reported in the local press.
This represents a 20 per cent increase on last year. The country’s finance minister reported that the increase came mainly from Thai visitors crossing the border to play.
The overall proportion of tax revenues in locations close to the Thai border was large, he said, and the returns depended very much on the situation along the border. “If there are problems there, people do not come to gamble, but the situation is better at the moment.” He was referring, say the media, to the military takeover of Thailand last year.
Recently the Cambodian government has tightened up on tax collection in casinos to bring it more closely under control pending fresh laws which will reach the National Assembly in the coming months.
