Australian planning minister Rob Stokes has ruled out asking an independent commission to hold a public hearing into modifications to the Barangaroo development in Sydney harbour to accommodate James Packer's proposed AU$1.5bn (€1.1bn) hotel and casino, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Stokes said he was confident that having the application examined by a new independent design advisory panel before it was sent to the commission for determination would provide "adequate scrutiny".

“I do not intend to make up new processes or treat Barangaroo differently to other projects,” he said.

"I am confident that between the two separate independent panels we have sufficient expert advice and oversight of the modification application."

The panel will be chaired by New South Wales government architect Peter Poulet.
