In the US, Las Vegas Sands and Genting could compete for a South Florida mega resort under legislation introduced by Florida House Republican leader Dana Young.

She has introduced four bills addressing everything from a mega resort to expanding gaming at pari-mutuels outside of Broward and Dade counties, and de-emphasising dog racing, the Miami Herald reported.

The primary bill would allow a destination casino in Miami or Broward counties. The developer would have to invest at least $2bn and gaming must occupy less than 10 per cent of the square footage. A local referendum would be required.

The bill would also reduce the racino slot tax rate to 25 per cent from 35 per cent; allow greyhound tracks in Palm and Lee counties to operate slots; and create a state gaming commission, among other things.

The bill comes ahead of the Seminole gaming compact expiring on July 31. The Seminoles want to be able to operate a full range of table games at their six casinos and have indicated a willingness to invest significantly in the properties.

However, the Seminoles are likely to baulk at a new compact if the legislature allows such an extensive gaming expansion.

The bills appear to be something of a wish list for the state’s various gaming factions and are sure to prompt a negative response from Florida’s powerful tourism industry, led by Disney.
