The speculation has already begun about casino development in North Jersey if legislators in the US state of New Jersey approve a referendum next November to allow gambling outside of Atlantic City.

And, according to NorthJersey.com, they might consider allowing two casinos. The locations most often cited are the Meadowlands racetrack west of Manhattan and Jersey City, which is just across the Hudson River from New York City.

Other jurisdictions are likely to pitch themselves as prospective casino sites, including Monmouth Park racetrack. However, Senator Ray Lesniak, the legislature’s leading proponent of expanded gambling, says Monmouth is too close to Atlantic City at just 80 miles distance.

Any North Jersey casinos would have a monopoly on New York City for several years as New York’s moratorium on casinos in the region expires in 2022.
