Poker expert Phil Ivey has lost his court action against Genting Casinos over winnings from using the “edge-sorting” technique in games of punto banco played at Crockfords Club, Mayfair, London, in August, 2012.

US citizen Ivey won £7.7m in a session and left for home to be told his winnings would be wired to him. But only his £1m stake arrived. He sued and the action was heard in the High Court in London.

Genting argued that edge sorting provided the customer with an element of “first card advantage” and was not a legitimate strategy. Therefore the casino had no liability.

The court agreed with the casino.
