In the US, the Argosy Sioux City has filed an 11th-hour appeal with the Iowa Supreme Court to keep the riverboat casino from closing next week.

In court documents, attorneys for Argosy parent Penn National Gaming asked the Supreme Court for an immediate, emergency stay of a District Court judge's ruling last Monday that affirmed a state gaming regulatory order to close the casino.

In her ruling, Judge Eliza Ovrom gave the Argosy a week to convince the Supreme Court to grant a stay. If that request is denied, the riverboat must close on Tuesday, Ovrom said.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission had originally ordered the casino to close July 1. Ovrom temporarily stayed that decision while she considered Argosy's appeal.

In her 30-page ruling on Monday, Ovrom dismissed the Argosy's petition for judicial review to vacate or reverse the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission's April 17 order that the Argosy must close because it doesn't meet state gaming licence requirements.
