The state of New York could have seven new casinos after voters decided to amend the constitution on Tuesday.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had previously warned that New York continues to “literally haemorrhage people” from its borders to neighbouring casino states, welcomed the passage of Proposal One.

“This vote will keep hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year in neighbouring states right here in New York, while increasing revenue for local schools, lowering property tax taxes and bringing proper regulation to the industry,” he said.

The vote also builds upon “landmark” deals agreed with Native American tribes this year that allow the state to enable an expansion of gambling without opposition from existing tribal operators.

“Since taking office, my administration has focused on reviving the state's economy and today's vote will further pave the way for the creation of new jobs, construction and increased tourism in communities across the state," Governor Cuomo added.
