Shares in Macau’s casino operators increased by more than 10 per cent on Thursday after the territory relaxed visa restrictions for visitors from mainland China.

In 2014, Macau recorded its first annual fall in gaming revenue as China’s anti-corruption drive kept Chinese high rollers away.

On Wednesday, the Macau government reversed limits on transit visitors from the mainland that has been introduced last year.

“This is the first sign of policy easing since the downturn began in Macau,” Anil Daswani, an analyst at Citigroup, told ft.com.

“The transit visa policy significantly hit premium mass gross gaming revenue since the second quarter of 2014 and this reversal was much needed to rekindle growth in the volatile Macau market.”
