Three times this week I have started the journey to work in sunglasses and finished it with my windscreen wipers working overtime. The weather in Oldham is just rubbish. My trip from Elland, near Halifax, is just 17 miles, but it takes me over the Pennines, the range of hills described as the ‘backbone of England,’ and the weather can be radically different on either side. But 75 per cent of the time it’s sunny in Yorkshire and wet in Greater Manchester - and I say this as a native of the latter.

Got butterflies in the stomach ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final. Just hope United are firing on all cylinders and Barca have an off day. Maybe Ryan Giggs can finish off a particularly bad week for him by hitting the winning goal… -Phil Clegg
